Cheque Printing Glossary

Quick definitions for the terms used across this site — useful if you're new to cheque printing software.

Amount in Words
The cheque amount written out in text (e.g. "Twenty Five Thousand Only") alongside the numeric figure, required so the two can be cross-checked against each other.
Bank Cheque Format
The specific layout a bank uses for its cheque leaves — where the date, payee, amount, and signature fields sit. Formats vary from bank to bank.
Cheque History
A saved record of every cheque printed — payee, amount, date, bank, company, and print status — kept for tracking and future reference.
Cheque Leaf
A single physical cheque page from a chequebook. Cheque leaf wastage refers to leaves ruined by misprints or misalignment.
Cheque Preview
An on-screen view of how a cheque will look once printed, used to check payee name, amount, date, and field placement before committing to paper.
MICR
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition — the machine-readable number line at the bottom of a cheque, used by banks for automated processing.
Multi-bank Support
The ability of cheque printing software to store and switch between several banks' cheque formats, useful for businesses with more than one account.
Payee
The person or business a cheque is made out to — the party who will receive the payment.
Payee Management
Saving and reusing beneficiary details, so repeat payments to the same vendor or supplier don't require retyping information each time.
Printer Alignment
Adjusting where cheque fields are positioned when printing, so text lands correctly on a physical cheque leaf rather than overlapping printed lines.
